Pity the Blind

Pity the Blind

New Masses, October 1, 1935

Peggy Bacon

This illustration comments on the lack of sympathy from the privileged class towards the economically disadvantaged. Two lower-class individuals, an older woman escorting a young blind boy, make their way onto the busy subway while other passengers watch with expressions ranging from disinterest to disgust. These onlookers are more fancifully attired, implying their higher social standing. Although in clear need of help, the disabled boy is pointedly shunned by the people around him. Here, artist Peggy Bacon highlights the bourgeois tendency to ignore larger societal issues in hopes that they will somehow resolve themselves, or otherwise just disappear.

  1. May I just say what a relief to find an individual who genuinely knows what they’re talking about
on the web. You actually realize how to bring an issue to
light and make it important. More people must read this and understand
this side of the story. It’s surprising you aren’t more popular since you surely have the gift.
