As Christianity spread, more chiefs converted. When they died, their tribesmen often erected crosses on their graves. Each of these drawings depict a different Cross being planted. They stood tall enough to sometimes stand parallel to the tall trees and mountains. Chief Nicholas of the Blackfoot, the most hostile tribe, asked for a cross to be planted on his grave. The quick spread of the “Black Robes'” mission is shown in this column, as these crosses-built on graves and for peace-could be found by 1847 throughout the lands of the Flathead, Coeur d’Alene and Blackfoot.
