Description

Artist: Nicolas Point, S.J. (1799-1868)
Medium: Watercolor Drawing; Pencil on Paper
Lender: Midwest Jesuit Archives

Integral to life in the Rockies was the hunting of buffalo, and Point soon experienced the tribulations of nomadic life. “Blessing of the Arms” shows how Christianity became incorporated into nomadic culture, as the hunters pray to the Cross for success. “Horses under the Ice” and “Mishaps during a Hunt” depict Point’s experiences of the hardships of nomadic culture, from shattered ice to thick sheets of snow causing horses to fall. Hunting life was a communal life, and “Setting up Evening” shows how each person in the hunt had a specific job-from chopping wood to building a teepee.
