Description

Artist: Nicolas Point, S.J. (1799-1868)
Medium: Pencil on Paper
Lender: Midwest Jesuit Archives

The Jesuit mission was always to establish a reduction in the Rockies, and to do so Point and his brothers set out to convert the Native population-beginning with the Flatheads. Ignace of the Flatheads became one of Point’s best contacts in the Salish tribe. He was quickly baptised by the Jesuit’s after their arrival into the region. The Flatheads also were Point’s favorite tribes, and “Planting of the Cross in Ignace’s Land” shows the rapid conversion of the Flathead tribe. The last two pieces depict the lands of this tribe from different points of view.
