Please join us as we welcome distinguished scholars and Loyola alumni Theodore J. Karamanski (BA ’75, MA ’78, PhD ’79) and Eileen M. McMahon (BA ’79, MA ’83, PhD ’89), editors of Civil War Chicago: Eyewitness to History. Drs. Karamanski and McMahon will discuss the Civil War’s transformative role in our city’s development as the heartland metropolis and the integral part that Chicagoans played in shaping the course of American history.
Theodore Karamanski is a professor of history and the director of the Public History Program at Loyola University Chicago. Eileen McMahon is a professor of history at Lewis University.

Theodore J. Karamanski, PhD is Professor of History and Director of the Public History Program at Loyola University Chicago. He has served as a heritage consultant to the National Park Service on numerous occasions in Alaska and across the Midwest region as well as National Geographic, The History Channel, and the Travel Channel. 
He is the author of seven books about the Midwest region. His Civil War scholarship, the topic of the lecture, includes participation in several historical archaeological projects at Civil War sites, a number of articles, the book Rally ‘Round the Flag: Chicago and the Civil War (2005) and Civil War Chicago: Eyewitness to History (with Eileen M. McMahon,2014). He is Past-President of the National Council on Public History. He is currently a consultant to the National Park Service doing a history and preservation plan for all Great Lakes Lighthouses.
Eileen M. McMahon, PhD, is Professor of History at Lewis University. She holds a PhD in History from Loyola University Chicago. She has served as editor of Mid-America: An Historical Review and the Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society. Her public history work includes serving as a consultant to the Chicago History Museum, National Park Service, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Most of her publications focus on Catholic and Irish history including the book What Parish Are You From? A Chicago Irish Community and Race Relations (1995). She is also co-author of North Woods River: The St. Croix Valley in Upper Midwest History (2008) and Civil War Chicago: Eyewitness to History (2014) which won the Illinois State Historical Society’s Russell S. Strange Award for Best Book of the Year.
