One Christmas at a Time – Jonathan Coulton and John Roderick

From the leader of The Long Winters and cult favorite nerd rocker Jonathan Coulton comes a hilarious reimagination of the Christmas album with the reality of dealing with difficult family members and spending the holiday in unusual places like jail. They also read the Wikipedia Chanukah entry to music. Recommended for when you realize this time isn’t always the most magical time of the year.

Christmas – Low

Beautiful mix of original and classic Christmas songs from this Minnesota band fronted by a husband and wife duo who are known for quiet but intense shows and are also practicing Christians. Don’t miss their telling of the nativity in Long Way Around the Sea. Recommended for headphone listening on a snowy morning.

A Damaged Christmas Gift To You – Various Artists

A holiday compilation from UK punk label Damaged Goods this album features original songs from mostly British artists such as Holly Golightly and Billy Childish. Some of the songs are x-rated, so this one is for grownups only. Recommended for listening on a dark night while hanging out with close friends.

Christmas in The Heart – Bob Dylan

This one is pure novelty–Bob Dylan’s interpretation of classic Christmas carols won’t necessarily stir your soul, but it will put a smile on your face. His gritty voice contrasts with the crooning we’re used to hearing on all these song. The video for Must Be Santa is sure to liven up your holiday party. Recommended for playing at those parties with a wide age range.

Christmas Songs – Bad Religion

A punk rock band from Los Angeles who formed in the early 80s, Bad Religion plays fast and upbeat music that is often based on current social issues and anti-establishment. This is a fast-paced and fun take on classic Christmas carols, that is also thoughtful with the settings and arrangements. Recommended for getting people on the dance floor.
