Staff Picks – Highs and Lows of 2016

To say 2016 has been a dramatic and unpredictable year would be the understatement of the century.  Let’s take a look back at some of the highs and lows of this rollercoaster year that made us constantly question our judgement, humanity, and sanity.

Jan 1: New Year’s rolls around, and you’re feeling fabulous, looking fine and super ready to stick to those resolutions.

Jan 10: Barely a week later, David Bowie dies.  The energy of your New Year’s outlook may have drained away, but everyone keeps holding on to every fabulous memory of the great entertainer – shedding a small silver lining onto a sad day.  We’ll always remember you, Bowie!

February 28th: Leo finally gets his Oscar, and the entire world applauds because not a single human being on this planet deserved it more.

2 Minutes later: Leo dedicated his acceptance speech to bringing international attention to the issue of climate change, which immediately makes us regret all of our life decisions from the moment we were born.

March: Nothing too notable took place in March this year.  Don’t get me wrong – things happened, but nothing that made us overjoyed or completely depressed.  For that, March, we thank you.  We didn’t know it at the time, but you were the chillest month of the year and for that we will be forever grateful.

April 21st: The music world loses another legend as Prince’s life is tragically cut short.  The sounds of Purple Rain saturate the airwaves while we all mourn our collective loss.

April 23rd: Beyonce releases “Lemonade” and it was like she KNEW WE NEEDED IT.

May 23rd: Loyola announces a University President!  Welcome, Dr. Rooney!

May 28th: Harambe the Gorilla is killed, spawning a new animal rights movement and internet memes that just won’t go away.

June 12: “Hamilton” cleans up at the Tony Awards and even though you probably hadn’t seen it, you were SO on their side.

June 23rd: Brexit happens – and the whole world is kind of like…

July 6: Niantic releases Pokemon Go and you finally have a reason to go outside again.

July 22: You can’t make it through Star Trek Beyond without crying because you miss Anton Yelchin.

August 5th: You get super excited for the Olympics, and your patriotism amplifies cheering for all your favorite athletes from the killer gymnastics team to some pretty awesome ping-pong players.

Later that month, Ryan Lochte and some other swimmers do embarrassing things and you take them very personally.

September 26: The first presidential debate happens…and we’re not really sure how we feel anymore…about anything…

October: The Cubs are in the playoffs!

But then all the new Galaxy Note 7s start spontaneously combusting, and you’re always worried about who might be sitting next to you, and what kind of phone they have…

November 2nd: The Best Day of the Year: The Cubs win the WORLD SERIES!

November 8th:  There was an election…

Now it’s December – so you know what that means…finals:

But it will all be worth it when we get to take a break for the holidays!

Whatever’s on deck for 2107 – I can’t say I’ll miss 2016 for a minute.

Abby is the business and communication librarian at Loyola University Chicago.  On the weekends she likes to walk around Rogers Park with her dog, Thomas Jefferson.  She cried a bit when the Cubs won the world series, and can’t go three days without eating Mexican Food.

  1. Abby, this feature of yours is really quite beautiful,
cleverly conceived and almost completely clean —
    The Cubs were all over Irish pubs, from Sligo to Listowel;
apart from them, and just like you, happy to see the back of 2016.
