The Friends of the Loyola Libraries Speaker Series welcomes John Donoghue, PhD<\/strong>, Associate Professor of History at Loyola University Chicago. In the words of Dr. Donoghue, “While pirates, the iconic outlaws of the silver screen, have long sustained the American dream of living dangerously, the real history of piracy reveals something even more intriguing – that far from losing themselves in a life of lawlessness, pirates created an alternative system of law and order, what they called ‘the government of the ship,’ to deliver rough and ready justice to the enemies of all ‘men of spirit.'”<\/p>\n

Dr. Donoghue is the author of Fire under the Ashes: An Atlantic History of the English Revolution<\/em>, which was published in 2013. He is now at work on his second book, The Life and Times of Captain Morgan: Piracy, Capitalism, and the Birth of Britain\u2019s Atlantic Empire<\/em>. A book signing will follow the program.
