Student Worker of the Month: Alexa Welch

Alexa Welch in Beijing

The Student Worker Appreciation Group for the LUC Libraries would like to congratulate Alexa Welch on being April’s Student Worker of the Month!

What year of college are you in and what is your major?
I am going to be a senior this fall and my major is International Studies. I will have a double minor in Asian Studies and Asian Languages and Literature.

What do you plan on doing after you graduate from Loyola?
I will either go to graduate school and study to get an English as a Second Language degree or go abroad for a few years and teach English as a second language.

Why do you have such an interest in languages?
I began learning Chinese in preparation for a trip to Taiwan (a Mandarin Chinese speaking country just off the shore of China), I decided that I should at least learn basic phrases that would come in handy if I got lost or wanted to order food. However, when I continued to learn, I realized how interesting and useful Chinese is to know. Then while I was in Taiwan I was introduced to Korean pop culture, and while listening to Korean being spoken, I realized how pretty spoken Korean was and became motivated about two years ago.

What do you enjoy about working for the libraries?
I love being able to help people, even if it is a simple task like instructing them on how to get to the nearest bathroom.

What do you like to do for fun?
I like exploring Chicago and being around friends. My hobbies include learning foreign languages, dance, singing, and volleyball. I also love to travel.

Tell us an interesting or little-known fact about you.
I’m from Albuquerque, New Mexico. My Dad is a native of Chicago, but moved out to New Mexico with my mom after they got married. Believe it or not, I like how cold it gets here in Chicago. Living in New Mexico, it would snow… rarely. And with only experiencing a handful of snow days during my childhood, I like to make up for lost time.

Of note:
Alexa spent a semester at Loyola’s Bejing Center. She won third place in a Chinese essay competition and won first place with her team at an International Tai Chi competition.

Congratulations, Alexa, on being Student Worker of the Month and thank you for your great service!
