October marks Filipino American History Month, commemorating the first recorded arrival of Filipinos in the continental United States on October 18, 1587. On that day, “Luzones Indios” came ashore from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Esperanza at what is now Morro Bay, California. In 2009, the U.S. Congress officially recognized October as Filipino American History Month, and since then, many states, counties, and cities have issued proclamations honoring this important observance.
