Loyola University Libraries recently obtained a wonderful new resource called Women in Social Movements that can be accessed from our Databases by Title list on the main library website.
This resource offers teachers highly interactive “modules” around hundreds of different themes. Those themes, such as “Second Wave Feminism,” or “Catholic Feminism,” for example, are then supplemented by primary documents that were scanned or transcribed from their original form and put online for students to study. In addition, the modules also include an introduction to the subject matter, a series of questions to help guide students as they study, bibliographies, and often, images or even sound files.
The goal of the Women & Social Movements resource is to provide both teachers and students with unparalleled access to primary sources about women. Invaluable for those who study history, sociology, political science, English, classics, modern languages, social work, and ecology.
Dr. Beth Myers, Loyola’s Director for Women & Leadership Archives , has participated in contributing content to the site. In a previous courses she taught at Loyola, Dr. Myers had students create their own modules which were then submitted to the website editors for review and possible permanent inclusion in the database. Dr. Myers was so encouraged by the students’ responses to the project she kept the same assignment for the spring 2008 course.
