Submissions Agreement
Eligibility: Visions of Chicago: Loyola Student Poetry Contest is open to all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at Loyola University Chicago, regardless of experience or previous publication, except where prohibited*.
Each entrant may submit up to three (3) poems on the subject of or inspired by the city of Chicago in any style, provided that the content of the poem is original, individual work of the entrant.
Entrants retain copyright on his/her/their own individual work—it may be published, submitted, or posted elsewhere before or after this contest. However, all submissions become the property of Loyola University Chicago and will be considered for publication on the Loyola University Chicago Libraries website, blog, Facebook, Twitter, and/or Tumblr.
Submission: Entrants should email libraryprograms@luc.edu with up to three poems attached either as .pdf, .doc, or .docx. The subject line should read ‘Student Poetry Contest’. The body of the email MUST contain: [a] the real and legal name of the entrant, [b] the entrant’s Loyola email address, [c] the entrant’s class year (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, graduate student, etc.)., and [d] a contact phone number for the entrant.
SHOULD YOU WISH TO HAVE YOUR PIECE JUDGED AND PUBLISHED ANONYMOUSLY, please advise us in the body of the email (we will still need your real name and Loyola email address in the body of the email). We will endeavor to honor requests to publish content anonymously. However, if your piece is published anonymously, we disclaim any responsibility whatsoever for any harm resulting from the unintentional disclosure of your identity.
Entrants must include all necessary information in the body of the email to qualify for the contest and may submit no more than three (3) poems.
Contest Dates: The Student Poetry Contest begins February 15, 2016 at 12:01 a.m. and ends March 15, 2016 at 11:59 p.m.
Selection: Poems are judged based on originality, creativity, and artistic quality. Only one poem will be selected as the winner, though other poems may appear on the library website, blog, or social media platforms.
Prizes: The winner of the contest will receive four (4) passes to the Shedd Aquarium; two (2) tickets for the winner and a guest to attend “Singing So Proud,” a gala to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Carl Sandburg’s Chicago Poems, hosted by the Friends of the Loyola University Chicago Libraries; and the chance to read the winning poem at the gala.
Decisions: The panel of judges consists of members of the Loyola University Chicago Libraries Public Relations and Outreach Committee and the Dean of Libraries. All decisions made by the judges are final.
Fees: There are no entry fees for any of the contests. No purchase necessary. No financial obligation to enter or win the contests.
Copyrights: The author retains all copyrights to the submitted poem. Winning poems will appear on the Loyola University Chicago Libraries website, blog, Facebook, and/or Tumblr with the copyright notice intact and may be published in a later format. By entering the contest, you consent to the publication of your poem if it is selected as a winning entry.
Notification: The winner will be announced March 24, 2016. The winner will be notified by phone or email. The name of the winner and their respective poem may appear on the Libraries’ website, blog, or social media platforms.
Privacy Policy: Loyola University Chicago collects personal information for the purpose of notifying contest winners. All information submitted is kept in confidence, and used solely for notification purposes and shall not be made public by Loyola University Chicago. Loyola University Chicago does not lease, sell, or share personal information collected.
By submitting, you certify that you are 18 years of age or older and have provided us with your real name and Loyola email address on our submissions form.

*If your poem has been published elsewhere, its submission and potential publication must not infringe the copyrights, trademarks or other rights of any third party.
