{"id":16141,"date":"2021-11-12T12:21:16","date_gmt":"2021-11-12T18:21:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libblogs.luc.edu\/noteworthy\/?p=16141"},"modified":"2026-01-12T15:35:44","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T21:35:44","slug":"women-and-leadership-archives-receives-grant-to-digitize-mundelein-college-historical-records","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libblogs.luc.edu\/noteworthy\/2021\/11\/12\/women-and-leadership-archives-receives-grant-to-digitize-mundelein-college-historical-records\/","title":{"rendered":"Women and Leadership Archives Receives Grant to Digitize Mundelein College   Historical Records"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The\u00a0Women and Leadership Archives (WLA)\u00a0recently\u00a0received an\u00a0Illinois History-Digital Imaging\u202fgrant\u202faward\u00a0of\u00a0$84,000\u00a0to\u00a0digitize and provide online access through the Illinois Digital Archives to unique historical records\u00a0of Mundelein College\u00a0previously only available in person\u00a0at the WLA<em>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>The Secretary of State\/Illinois State Library funds the\u00a0grant to support\u00a0eligible libraries to carry out projects involving the digitization and provision of web access to their important historical and cultural collections.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0WLA\u2019s\u00a0project\u00a0is\u00a0called Mundelein at 90, and its activities are taking place now until summer of 2023.\u00a0 Project updates will be\u00a0displayed\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.luc.edu\/wla\/mundeleinat90\" target=\"_blank\">Mundelein\u00a0at 90 project\u00a0page<\/a>\u00a0in the upcoming months.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Established in 1994, the Women and Leadership Archives (WLA) collects, preserves, and makes available permanently valuable records of women and women\u2019s organizations, which document women\u2019s lives, roles, and contributions. The WLA grew out of the need to care for the records of Mundelein College and expanded to collect papers of women leaders and women\u2019s organizations.\u00a0 The Mundelein at 90\u00a0digitization\u00a0project\u00a0directly supports\u00a0the WLA\u2019s mission to make these records available.  Built mere days after the stock market crash of 1929, enrollment numbers for Mundelein College were beyond initial expectations, despite obvious hardships. This indomitable spirit as well as a dedication to social justice would remain\u00a0constants\u00a0at this new college. The history of Mundelein College, the last private, independent, Catholic women\u2019s college in Illinois, continues to intrigue alumni, genealogists, history buffs, and architectural historians alike.\u00a0\u00a0Digitization of\u00a0items in high demand,\u00a0such as\u00a0photographs of student life and notable architecture, scrapbooks created by students, student organizations, and faculty, and early documents from Mundelein College\u2019s foundation and construction,\u00a0will\u00a0help meet current demand as well as expand the reach of the archives, reach new audiences, and allow access to increase significantly.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Women and Leadership Archives<\/strong>\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>The Women and Leadership Archives (WLA)\u00a0is part of the\u202f<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/luc.edu\/gannon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gannon Center<\/a>\u202fand\u202f<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/libraries.luc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Loyola University\u00a0Chicago\u00a0Libraries<\/a>\u202fand serves a wide variety of users, ranging from students and scholars to the general public.
