{"id":16817,"date":"2023-06-21T17:24:26","date_gmt":"2023-06-21T22:24:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/libblogs.luc.edu\/noteworthy\/?p=16817"},"modified":"2026-01-12T15:35:43","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T21:35:43","slug":"university-libraries-receives-grant-from-the-american-library-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libblogs.luc.edu\/noteworthy\/2023\/06\/21\/university-libraries-receives-grant-from-the-american-library-association\/","title":{"rendered":"University Libraries Secures Grant from the American Library Association"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Loyola University Chicago Libraries was selected to receive a competitive grant from the American Library Association (ALA) for the Great Stories Club, a thematic reading and discussion program designed for at-risk teens and young adults.\u00a0 As one of 58 U.S. libraries and 96 grant recipients selected from across the county, <strong>Research and Learning Librarian, Annette Alvarado<\/strong>, will work with Arrupe College students to read and discuss novels selected for the GSC themes, \u201cFinding Your Voice: Speaking Truth to Power\u201d and \u201cDeeper Than Our Skins: The Present Is a Conversation with the Past.\u201d\u00a0 The themes, created by scholars Maria Sachiko Cecire and Susana M. Morris, feature books that explore questions of race, equity, identity and history.\u00a0 Select titles from the themes include \u201cBetween the World and Me\u201d by Ta-Nehisi Coates, \u201cDreaming in Indian: Contemporary Native American Voices\u201d, ed. Lisa Charleyboy and Mary Beth Leatherdale, \u201cThe Shadow Hero\u201d by Gene Luen Yang, illus. by Sonny Liew, and \u201cAlways Running: La Vida Loca: Gang Days in L.A.\u201d by Luis J. Rodriguez.\u00a0<br><br>The University Libraries will receive a $1,000 programming grant and will work with small groups of approximately 10 students to provide up to four theme-related books for each participant to keep as their own, as well as audiobooks, to use with the group and convene opportunities for exploration and discussion of relevant humanities content among peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2006, ALA\u2019s Great Stories Club has helped libraries engage young adults with accessible, thought-provoking literature.
