Ask the Staff<\/strong> is a way for you to get to know some of the people that work for the Loyola libraries. In honor of Thanksgiving, staff members were asked to fill-in-the-blanks for our Thanksgiving “Mad Lib” story. A “Mad Lib” is a word game<\/a> in which a person provides a list of words from a specific category (such as an adjective<\/em> or verb<\/em>) for a story unknown to them, thus making for a fun and entertaining read.<\/p>\n

Below is the original story composed by Education<\/a> Librarian Tracy Ruppman<\/strong>. The words that our participants substituted for in the blanks are highlighted in bold print. Read on to see how Loyola Libraries staff members re-shaped the story of the first Thanksgiving. Enjoy!<\/p>\n

The First Thanksgiving<\/strong>, by Tracy Ruppman<\/p>\n

The first Thanksgiving was actually a CELEBRATION<\/strong> of the first HARVEST<\/strong> by the PILGRIMS<\/strong> and their INDIAN<\/strong> friends in 1621. The PILGRIMS<\/strong> had come to AMERICA<\/strong> in December of 1620 and had suffered a difficult year. Now the CORN<\/strong> crops were ready to HARVEST<\/strong> and the PILGRIMS<\/strong> were preparing for winter. The INDIANS<\/strong> who lived nearby were FRIENDLY<\/strong> and eager to help the PILGRIMS<\/strong>. After the HARVEST<\/strong>, the leader of the PILGRIMS<\/strong> decided a CELEBRATION<\/strong> would help boost the morale of the n1<\/em><\/strong> colonists remaining and invited the INDIAN<\/strong> chief and n2<\/strong><\/em> of his people to join them. The CELEBRATION<\/strong> lasted three days and included wild TURKEYS<\/strong> and other fowl, venison, CORN<\/strong>, nuts and berries. Thanksgiving was not regularly a CELEBRATION<\/strong> until 1863 when Abraham Lincoln issued a national proclamation.<\/p>\n
