{"id":5117,"date":"2012-01-19T12:07:57","date_gmt":"2012-01-19T18:07:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.lib.luc.edu\/locl\/?p=5117"},"modified":"2026-01-12T15:37:40","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T21:37:40","slug":"tech-trends-w-tara-apples-big-education-announcement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libblogs.luc.edu\/noteworthy\/2012\/01\/19\/tech-trends-w-tara-apples-big-education-announcement\/","title":{"rendered":"Tech Trends w\/ Tara: Apple&#8217;s big education announcement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today Apple announced its official entrance into the e-textbook field promising to revolutionize education&#8217;s outdated, static, and expensive print model. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a run down of the 3 main parts of today&#8217;s announcement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>iBooks 2<\/strong>: Apple released an update for its primary reading application chock full of education enhancements. \u00a0These include the ability to highlight, explore 3D models, view embedded videos and images, make flashcards out of notes and highlights, look up word definitions, search all content, flip back and forth between text and multimedia and more. \u00a0Apple has teamed up with education&#8217;s Big Three (McGraw-Hill, Pearson, and\u00a0Houghton Mifflin) and will provide those e-texts for $14.99 or less.<em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/allthingsd.com\/20120119\/apples-new-math-or-why-a-15-ebook-equals-a-75-paper-book\/?mod=atdtweet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How can they offer them for so little?<\/a>)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>iBooks Author<\/strong>: \u00a0This is where things get interesting. \u00a0While companies like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inkling.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inkling<\/a>\u00a0are already producing impressive interactive textbooks for the iPad, products which allow instructors to create their own books are fewer far, can be limited to a single publisher, and often don&#8217;t have the multimedia support Apple will provide. \u00a0Any user (any Mac user that is &#8211;
