Acclaimed Chinese-American author Anchee Min will be the featured author at Loyola University Chicago Libraries 2nd Annual Gregory and Rosalind Terry Lecture<\/p>\n

Chinese-American author, painter, photographer, and musician Anchee Min will present the second annual Gregory and Rosalind Terry Lecture at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 24, 2013, in the Information Commons at Loyola University Chicago\u2019s Lakeshore campus. There is no admission charge and the program is open to the public. A book signing will follow Ms. Min\u2019s presentation.<\/p>\n

Anchee Min, born in Shanghai in 1957, has published a memoir, Red Azalea<\/em>, and six historical novels, the latest of which is Pearl of China, a fictionalized account of a friendship between Nobel Prize-winning author and activist Pearl S. Buck and a young Chinese girl in a small South China town. The Cooked Seed<\/em>, her sequel memoir to Red Azalea set for release on May 7, 2013, describes Min\u2019s move to America and her early years here. <\/p>\n

Growing up during the Cultural Revolution in 1970\u2019s Red China, Min was sent to a labor camp at age 17 where she was discovered by talent scouts. She worked as an actress in propaganda films at the Shanghai Film Studio before coming to the United States in 1984 with the help of actress Joan Chen. Min spoke no English when she arrived in Chicago, but within six months taught herself the language, in part, by watching \u201cSesame Street\u201d and \u201cMr. Roger\u2019s Neighborhood\u201d on American television.<\/p>\n

According to bookreporter.com, \u201cAnchee Min\u2019s writing has been praised for its raw, sharp language and historical accuracy. Her bestselling memoir, Red Azalea<\/em>, the story of her childhood in communist China, has been compared to The Diary of Anne Frank<\/em>. Min credits the English language with giving her a means to express herself, arming her with the voice and vocabulary to write about growing up during China\u2019s Cultural Revolution.\u201d The New York Times<\/em> has called her \u201ca wild, passionate and fearless American writer.\u201d<\/p>\n

The annual Terry Lecture is endowed by John and Terese Terry of San Francisco in memory of their late children Gregory and Rosalind. The Terrys are both alumni of Loyola University Chicago. The event is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Loyola University Chicago Libraries. <\/p>\n
