Caroline Starkey is Associate Professor of Religion and Society in the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science at the University of Leeds (UK). She is a sociologist of religion, interested primarily in Buddhism in contemporary Britain, gender, and space and place. Her most recent monograph was published in the Routledge Critical Studies in Buddhism Series in 2020, and is entitled ‘Women in British Buddhism: Committment, Connection and Community’. She has written about feminist methodology in the study of Buddhism, the development of Buddhist buildings in England, Fo Guang Shan in the UK, and about the contours of the sacred and secular in British Buddhism, and is a Co-Chair of the Buddhism in the West Unit for the American Academy of Religion, as well as on the steering committee for the British Sociological Association Sociology of Religion Study Group.
