{"id":90,"date":"2015-02-13T20:13:38","date_gmt":"2015-02-13T20:13:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.lib.luc.edu\/wla\/?p=90"},"modified":"2026-01-12T21:33:58","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T21:33:58","slug":"collections-highlight-carolyn-farrell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/libblogs.luc.edu\/wla\/2015\/02\/13\/collections-highlight-carolyn-farrell\/","title":{"rendered":"Collections Highlight: Carolyn Farrell"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_91\" style=\"width: 169px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lib.luc.edu\/wla\/files\/2014\/02\/Farrell-Election-to-City-Council-1977.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-91 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/libblogs.luc.edu\/wla\/files\/2014\/02\/Farrell-Election-to-City-Council-1977-159x300.jpg\" alt=\"Carolyn Farrell after being elected to the Dubuque, Iowa City Council, 1977.\" width=\"159\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/libblogs.luc.edu\/wla\/files\/2014\/02\/Farrell-Election-to-City-Council-1977-159x300.jpg 159w, https:\/\/libblogs.luc.edu\/wla\/files\/2014\/02\/Farrell-Election-to-City-Council-1977-544x1024.jpg 544w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 159px) 100vw, 159px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-91\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carolyn Farrell after being elected to the Dubuque, Iowa City Council, 1977.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Carolyn Farrell, B.V.M., was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1934.\u00a0 In 1953 at the age of 18, Farrell joined the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM), taking her final vows in 1961.\u00a0 She received her B.A. in History from Clarke College in 1966 and went on to attain a Master\u2019s of Science in Education Administration from Western Illinois University. \u00a0Farrell also completed post-graduate work at the University of Iowa in Administration of Higher Education and at the Hubert Humphrey Institute for Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>After holding positions as a teacher and administrator for a number of years, in 1974 Farrell began serving on several public committees in Dubuque, Iowa. \u00a0It was during this time that Farrell realized she wanted to become involved in politics. \u00a0She ran for Dubuque City Council in 1977 and became the first woman to be elected for a four year term. \u00a0In 1980, Farrell was elected for a one year term as the Mayor of Dubuque, becoming the first woman religious to serve as a mayor of a city in the United States.<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The following year Farrell returned to her former position as the Director of Continuing Education at Clarke College, a position which she held until 1988. \u00a0In 1991, Farrell accepted the Interim Presidency of <a href=\"http:\/\/luc.edu\/wla\/mcarchives.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mundelein College<\/a> in Chicago where she oversaw the College\u2019s affiliation with Loyola University Chicago.\u00a0 Farrell went on to serve as Associate Vice President of Loyola University for Mundelein College and Associate Vice President and Director of the Ann Ida Gannon, BVM, Center for Women and Leadership. Her prominent place in Women\u2019s History is reflected by her attendance at the United Nations 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"http:\/\/luc.edu\/media\/lucedu\/wla\/pdfs\/Farrell,_Carolyn.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Carolyn Farrell, BVM Papers<\/a> at the WLA consists of 13 linear feet and document Farrell\u2019s professional life with the majority of her papers spanning from 1977-1996.
