To close out 2012, we asked library staff members to write lists–of anything they want. Today we feature Kate Dunn’s list of fun things to do around Chicago.
Kate is the Preservation Associate and runs the Bindery at Cudahy Library.
Kate’s Fun Things To Do In Chicago
1) Chicago Reader Anti-Valentine’s Day Party
2) Baby, it’s cold outside. Or surely it will be eventually. Work up a good sweat from the inside at Bikram Yoga Andersonville. I’ve done bikram yoga all over town and these folks and their space are simply the best. I’ve found the high temp of this kind of yoga to be a downright treat in the winter, and serves as training to better handle the heat and humidity of Chicago summer.
(Andersonville)
3) Chiditarod
4) Wanna see circus arts for cheap? Check out El Circo Cheapo Cabaret. It’s the first Saturday of every month and it features amazing everyday folks performing in a loft in Ukrainian Village. It started as a place to let emerging circus artists try out their acts, and so each show is very different. I’ve seen four shows and it blew my mind in new ways each time.
(West Town)
5) The Onion’s Urban Rodeo League
6) There are a couple of us here in the library who like to work it at Rowfit Chicago. If you want to stray away from Rogers Park and get in a killer workout with a super supportive community, this is a great place to start. They offer Olympic weightlifting, CrossFit, kettlebell training, cycling, and of course rowing classes and bootcamps… even a yearly Rowing Marathon! Rowing is hard. And awesome. Everyone ought to try it out, it may come in handy someday.
(West Town)
8) Need to de-stress? Do whirlpools sound good to you? Consider a trip to King Spa. The spa is not actually located in Chicago proper, unfortunately, but totally worth the journey to Niles. It’s has all the fixin’s of your run-of-the-mill spa, but with nine different-themed saunas and a hot rock room. This place is veritable Candyland (truly, as it is also kid-friendly) complete with a movie theater (!), nap room, and Korean food court. You can absolutely spend 24 hours there.
(Niles, IL)
10) This one goes out to all of you who are sick of losing Cubs, sidelined Bears, and Bulls you stopped caring about after 1998. Check out a Windy City Rollers roller derby game. This up-and-coming sport has a ton of action and is played by actual, everyday women who just may work in your library’s bindery…just sayin’…
Next game is January 26th.
(UIC Pavilion, Little Italy)
