Staff Picks: Abby’s Places to Check Out in Rogers Park and Edgewater

To close out 2013, we asked library staff members to write lists–of anything they want. Today we feature Abby Annala’s list of places to check out during the spring 2014 semester in Rogers Park/Edgewater.

Abby is a reference librarian and the subject specialist for Business Administration and Communications at Lewis Library.

We all know about the popular Rogers Park eateries, but recently there have been several spots opening up just a short walk from campus. Here’s a list of recommended places to check out once you return to campus in the spring!

Twisted Tapas: 1146 Pratt – opened October 2013
Delicious tapas including jalapeno cheddar gnocchi, caramelized bananas with tequila caramel, and Waygu Short Ribs.

Cookies and Carnitas: 5757 N Broadway – opened December 2013
Formerly Barry’s Spot, this new restaurant features pizza by the slice, giant sandwiches, and ice cream sandwiches made with Hagan Daaz and two giant homemade cookies.

Pearl BBQ – 5353 N Broadway – opening spring 2014
This BBQ joint is being designed to have a New Orleans vibe, and will even have rooftop patio seating for the nicer months.

Bullhead Cantina – 1406 Morse – opening February 2014
This will be the whiskey and taco bar’s second location (the original is in Humbolt Park) and will be at the former MorseL location. They serve craft beers, homemade tortillas, and atypical taco flavors like avocado, fried chicken, and pulled pork.

Heartland Cafe – 7000 Glennwood – opened in 1977
Okay, so maybe this isn’t a NEW restaurant but they do have a new menu! Focusing on Midwestern style classics, the new menu is inspired by the concept of eating from the “heartland.” Plus, comedic icons Nick Offerman and Tina Fey both love eating there when they come to town, so it’s obviously worth checking out.

Le Pita Fresh – 6141 N Broadway – opening soon (date not available)
The former CJ’s diner will now serve shwarma, falafel, and kebobs. This is the restaurant’s second location.

Leona’s Restaurant – 6935 N Sheridan – opened 1950s
Leona’s is another one of those local establishments getting revamped. A new owner, new menu, and new look to the restaurant is expected around January.

  1. The Le Pita Fresh location opened last week, and they have a $5.99 combo special if you show your Loyola ID. Also, they have great hummus!
