Jean Claude is a survivor of the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda perpetrated against the Tutsi
minority and moderate Hutus. The Genocide, which Jean Claude has documented in his films,
claimed the lives of his father, two brothers, a sister, and many relatives.

In 2004 Mary was asked to come to Rwanda from Chicago to help begin an international
community-based HIV/AIDS initiative, which has improved the lives of women and children.
Since 2004 she has traveled to Rwanda 25 times, most recently in June.
