On September 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, stating that by the following New Year’s Day in 1863, “all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.”  To honor this momentous moment in American history, you are invited to attend a lecture by Dr. Michael Burlingame, holder of the Chancellor Naomi B. Lynn Distinguished Chair in Lincoln Studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield.  Dr. Burlingham is the author or editor of 17 books on the Civil War era including the definitive biography of Abraham Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln:  A Life (2008).
